Made to measure fireplaces: what it really means
What a made to measure fireplace actually involves, why buying from the manufacturer changes the result, and how the process works from first measurement to fitted.

The phrase gets used loosely, so it is worth being clear about what made to measure fireplaces actually are. A made to measure fireplace is cut to the exact dimensions of your room and your opening, in the stone and colour you choose, rather than picked off a shelf in a handful of standard sizes. At Sontuoso Stone we make ours ourselves, in our own workshop, which is what lets us build to your measurements instead of asking your room to fit a catalogue.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Most fireplaces sold on the high street come in fixed widths and heights. If your chimney breast, hearth or ceiling height does not match, you either compromise on the look or pay for awkward adjustments on site. A fireplace made to your measurements sidesteps all of that.
Why made to measure fireplaces beat off-the-shelf
A fireplace is a fixed feature in the most-used room in the house, so the proportions have to be right. When the surround is cut to your chimney breast and your hearth, the whole thing sits correctly: the mantel lines up, the returns are even, and there are no filler pieces or scribed gaps to hide a size that was never quite right.
Made to measure also means the fire fits the surround properly, whether that is a stove, a gas fire or an electric fire, so the opening is sized to the appliance rather than the other way around. The result looks built-in, because in effect it is.
Made in our own workshop
We are the manufacturer, not a shop reselling someone else’s range. Every marble fireplace and stone surround we supply is cut and finished by us. Buying direct from the people who make it does two things: it keeps the chain mark-up out of your price, and it means one team is responsible for the piece from the block of stone to the fitted result.
It also means we can genuinely make what you ask for. A wider mantel, a deeper hearth, a specific profile on the returns: these are normal requests for us, not special orders that get quoted at a premium.
Any stone, any colour
Made to measure is about material as much as size. We work in marble, limestone, quartz, porcelain and more, in a colour range no showroom chain can match, and you can hold real samples in your own light before you decide. The same design can feel completely different in a warm cream limestone versus a dark veined marble, so seeing the actual stone in the actual room is part of getting it right.
If you are weighing up finishes, our colours and finishes page is a good place to start, and we bring samples to the showroom so you can compare them side by side.
How the process works
It is simpler than people expect. You tell us the room and the look you are after, we measure up, and we make the fireplace to those measurements in your chosen stone. From there it is delivered or fitted by us, finished to the proportions of the room.
Because we are based in Solihull and serve Birmingham and Warwickshire, most of this happens in person: you can see the stone, talk through the design, and get one clear quote with everything in it. Have a look at our marble fireplaces, then request a quote or visit the Solihull showroom and we will help you get the size, stone and style right for your room.
