How to choose a hearth

A hearth does more than sit under the fire. It changes the proportions of the whole fireplace and can be a safety-critical part of the job, especially with stoves.

Common questions

Does every fireplace need a hearth?

Most fireplace projects need a hearth visually or practically, but the exact requirement depends on the fire, stove and room. We confirm that before making.

Can the hearth match the surround?

Yes. The hearth can be made in the same stone as the surround, or chosen to sit quietly with the rest of the room.

Is a raised hearth better than a flush hearth?

Neither is automatically better. Raised hearths feel more traditional. Lower hearths can suit cleaner rooms. The fire type also affects what is sensible.

Do stoves need special hearth planning?

Yes. Stoves involve heat and clearance requirements, so the hearth must be planned around the appliance and installation route.
